Do you know what the most critical piece of equipment is? Most people assume it’s the type of golf ball or the club you carry around. While your bag and all the items in it matter, including the multiple clubs you own, it’s not the vital piece. You need the best golf shoes for your ultimate performance.
Let’s explain why you need those. The first thing you need to understand is stability is everything in golf. You calculate and calibrate your swings down to the dot, so you don’t want to screw any of your game. Also, you want a durable pair of shoes because you will be walking for approximately 5 miles every time you play an 18-hole round.
Hence, follow through with the following features to find out what you should be looking for in a pair of waterproof golf shoes.
Not all golf shoes are waterproof, as they all have various designs. Even shoes marketed as waterproof are not necessarily entirely resistant to water. It all depends on the material, the design, and the overall support provided by the shoes.
Even on regular days on the course, the grass is potentially wet. It can be damp either due to morning dew, rain, melted snow, or even the watering of the grass. However, we generally recommend you pursue a shoe with a waterproof guarantee.
Even though we always opt for waterproof ones, you won’t have to unless absolutely necessary. For instance, if you often play golf in the winters, it’s a safe bet to purchase waterproof ones. However, if you only prefer playing during the summer, you might not need waterproof technology.
With the constant advancement in technology, more and more designs are surfacing that allow complete waterproofing, and some do not even get wet. However, remember that not all “waterproof golf shoes” are entirely resistant. Some of them only offer that through the outsoles, posing a problem.
If you’re conflicted, almost all professional golf players have multiple pairs of shoes that they switch between according to the environment.
There are three main types of material that golf shoes are made of. These materials are water-resistant lining, leather, and synthetic material. Now, the one you choose to go with depends entirely on the following elements: comfort, need, and preference.
One of the most frequently used materials, which you might have heard of, is GORETEX. Now, it’s not the only water-resistant material out there, but it’s one of the most widespread. However, other companies choose to manufacture their very own material.
These materials often come as very thickly layered ones. Hence, they’re ideal for wearing during cold weather, as the layers add to your warmness. However, that also means that they might cause some overheating problems for your feet. That happens mainly during the summertime or even if you’re walking around for too long. This material is the warmest out of all the others.
Not only is it the most popular material used in golf shoes, but it provides excellent water-resistant qualities. You won’t have to worry about the fit around your foot either, as the leather is processed and woven into the shoes’ exterior. That provides a much more snug and tight fit around your foot. However, this might get annoying for some people, as the snug fit is not for everyone. Despite that, the leather provides incredible stability for you during your games, which is one of the most essential aspects of improving your gameplay. Keep in mind that leather is often more expensive than other materials.
If you’re a complete newbie to golf and have no plans of professionally pursuing it or playing regularly, synthetic golf shoes might be the way. They’re the fake version of leather, making them a much cheaper alternative. The dive in the price is mainly due to the material being much thinner than leather. Moreover, the fabric is not as breathable or comfortable as leather shoes. Hence, properly evaluate all your other options before opting for the synthetic choice.
If we’re addressing the versatility, spikeless shoes are the winners here. That’s mainly because spikeless ones are much more lightweight than spikes and provide flexible soles that make you more comfortable.
As for spiked golf shoes, these provide you with a better overall grip on the course. If you’re playing in a hilly area or a wet room, we recommend you go for spiked shoes. Otherwise, it all boils down to personal preference, as they both perform the same in a standard, dry environment.
The main, and most traditional form of the lacing system, is the old tie and knot like any other sneakers you might own. That’s the most straightforward way of trying them up, and they provide the utmost stability as they wrap around your leg.
However, as the years progressed, many companies started optimizing different methods of lacing golf shoes. That includes Velcro, where you strap a piece of cloth across the shoes to secure it in place. Velcro makes tying the shoe and taking it off much more straightforward. However, it is not as snug around the feet.
The most recent one is a mechanical system, similar to the ones for ski boots. While it does provide more consistent stability throughout each round of gold, it’s generally more expensive than other alternatives.
There are two main types of styles when it comes to golf shoes:
Traditional: The traditional golf shoe is that sleek design that has been around forever. These are highly durable and will last you for so long you won’t need a new pair for a while. We love them for their elegant design and the sturdiness they provide.
Athletic: Athletic golf shoes look more like sneakers, so they’re often confused. However, compared to the traditional shoes, they’re more breathable, flexible, and lightweight. Moreover, you can wear these shoes in everyday wear as they resemble what sneakers look like. Hence, you can optimize their use for other causes.
When looking at the best waterproof golf shoes, it is essential to consider some vital elements. These include water resistance, suitable seasons and weather conditions, level of comfort, weight, spiked or spikeless attributes, available fits and sizes of each pair.
All of these factors will have a significant impact on your game. Therefore, deciding which waterproof golf shoes to purchase must be taken carefully after examining each product by your preferences.
Why Trust Us
We know how review websites can be a little bogus and often misleading, so our policy is different. Our approach is all about transparency, so we welcome any comments, inquiries, or remarks. Moreover, our undying love for sports fueled us to go through with this website, so we want to provide the ultimate products.
But to completely trust us, you must fully understand what our process entails. The very first thing we do is compile a complete list of over 30 shoes, which is only our initial process. Afterward, we slowly eliminate some of those from our list by checking whether they have the fundamental qualities we look for. We don’t disregard any of them if they’re lacking on one level, as we often review all the best shoes if they have over 70% of the desired qualities.
Now, we would like you to meet our fantastic team. Our founder, Elena Moreno, is the heart and soul of this project. She’s the one who started this whole thing solely because she wanted to provide others with the most honest reviews of gym equipment.
On the other hand, we have our co-founder, David Keller. He’s a personal trainer who has a knack for being incredible at almost any sport. He’s nearly tried every sport out there, as his adrenaline-junky side keeps him wanting to experience more of it all.
How We Pick
After we have our list of shoes that we want to test, we simply check online sources for their specifications. We look at different characteristics, including quality, weight, dimensions, and general features. While not all the products we listed above have the features we are looking for, we try to diversify things to include various products.
So, the way we pick our initial products that make it to the very first list is generally a little random and scattered. The list is comprised of over 30 pairs of shoes we have written down, including ones we’ve tried before, ones from reviews online, and ones recommended by experts.
After we compile the initial list, we have an extensive research process. We look into the features of each product and evaluate whether it deserves to be tested or not from the fundamental elements it supplies.
Here are some of the features we look for:
- Lightweight: even waterproof shoes must be lightweight. Any sports shoe being too heavy defeats the purpose of the shoe itself. Hence, we often disregard any product that weighs over 5 pounds, as that will eventually slow down your game.
- Waterproof: this goes without saying, but we ensure that each of these “waterproof” golf shoes is actually resistant through the online reviews and comments we find. This is simply before our more extensive, water-based testing process.
- Material: we prefer any leather material, as that provides the highest quality golf shoes out there. However, leather ones do get rewarded extra points, but we do not discard any other material just yet.
- Stability: stability does come from the shoe’s design and how the insoles and outsoles are made. Hence, we go through the essential online evaluation to determine whether they will provide the fundamental stability we’re looking for.
How We Test
We test various aspects when it comes to the best waterproof golf shoes. However, while the water-resistant part of it all is vital, we also try the fundamental elements of any sports shoe.
We had a list of 50 volunteers for this project who helped us test out each pair of shoes. Now, we assign one brand to each person, which allows us to narrow down the specifications we’re looking for.
Here is our process:
Each volunteer is asked to wear the same pair of shoes on a golf course, play some golf for around 5 hours, and repeat it for 5 days. That allows us to evaluate whether they feel comfortable walking around while playing golf. Moreover, we ask them to wear them throughout a typical day, doing chores and such.
The stability comes from the design itself, which is not something you can detect by simply looking at the pair. Hence, our volunteers spend over 25 hours playing golf and walking around through the walking and playing process described above. Then, we ask them whether they believe their pair of shoes caused some stability problems while walking, swinging, or running.
The grip is one of the most essential things for waterproof shoes, but it’s often overlooked. While the shoe itself is expected to be repellent to water, it must also have enough grip to combat any slippery situation in rainy weather. Hence, the grip often comes from the spikes on the golf shoes or the design itself from underneath. We ask our volunteers to walk in puddles of water, in rainy weather, and even on wet grass to evaluate whether they slip or not and how often do they do so.
This is one test we conduct to find out whether the shoe is truly waterproof. First, we remove the insoles simply because it’s a hassle to dry them up. Afterward, we pour a good amount of water into the shoe itself and let it sit for approximately 15 minutes.
There were two results from this little experiment. The first one is that the shoes start leaking water. That’s immediately awful news, as that means the boots aren’t actually waterproof. That automatically eliminates the pair. On the other hand, some would not leak a tiny drop, which proved that they’re waterproof.
Any leather golf shoe is automatically waterproof due to the nature of the material. However, the problem with leather is that it often deteriorates after prolonged exposure to water. Hence, we soak every pair of shoes in a pool of water for approximately 5 hours, then let them dry. We then repeat the process 5 times. This allows us to observe the consistency of the material from which the shoes are built. Some materials do lose their elements and color over time, while others persevere and maintain their qualities.
